Simple but effective feedback generation to tutor abstract problem solving

چکیده
To generate natural language feedback for an intelligent tutoring system, we developed a simple planning model with a distinguishing feature: its plan operators are derived automatically, on the basis of the association rules mined from our tutorial dialog corpus. Automatically mined rules are also used for realization. We evaluated 5 different versions of a system that tutors on an abstract sequence learning task. The version that uses our planning framework is significantly more effective than the other four versions. We compared this version to the human tutors we employed in our tutorial dialogs, with intriguing results.

Computer Tutors Can Reduce Student Errors and Promote Solution Efficiency for Complex Engineering Problems
An ability to solve complex problems, for which a variety of solution paths are possible, is an important goal in engineering education. While feedback is critical to learning, hand grading of homework rarely provides effective, timely feedback on attempts to solve complex problems. Such feedback is also unfeasible in distance education contexts. A technology, based on the approach of cognitive...
متن کاملDynamic Student Modelling in an Intelligent Tutor for LISP Programming
We describe an intelligent tutor for LISP programming. This tutor achieves a set of pedagogical objectives derived from Anderson's (1983) learning theory provide instruction in the context of problem-solving, have the student generate as much of each solution as possible, provide immediate feedback on errors, and represent the goal structure of the problem-solving The tutorial interface facilit...
متن کاملGoing Beyond the Problem Given: How Human Tutors Use Post-Solution Discussions to Support Transfer
Two studies investigated the role and effectiveness of post-solution, reflective dialogues in physics tutorials. The first study investigated the instructional roles of post-solution discussions, their relationship to problem-solving discussions, and features that predict learning. Seven tutors individually guided 15 students as they worked on problems in the Andes physics tutoring system. Tuto...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effectiveness of a Tutorial Dialogue System for Self-Explanation
Previous research has shown that self-explanation can be supported effectively in an intelligent tutoring system by simple means such as menus. We now focus on the hypothesis that natural language dialogue is an even more effective way to support self-explanation. We have developed the Geometry Explanation Tutor, which helps students to state explanations of their problemsolving steps in their ...
متن کاملModel-Based Generation of Demand Feedback in a Programming Tutor
Can a model-based tutor be designed to automatically generate demand feedback for any problem in its domain? Would the resulting feedback be effective enough for the user to learn from? In this paper, we will examine these issues in the context of a tutor for programming. We will propose a two -stage feedback generation mechanism that maintains the principle of modularity characteristic of mode...
